NASA World Wind Moon is not detailed, accessible or delicious as Googles? I beg to differ

Ogle Earth seems to be of the opinion NASA World Wind’s Moon is not as good as Googles, well I guess it’s clobbering time, I’ll use my intellect to win this one though.

First off lets start with the dumbest point he made, accessibility, oh come on, Google locks all data under an EULA, World Winds Moon data is accessible to anyone for any use, you may need to make a simple php script to access the data directly from NASA’s servers, but thats only if you don’t want to use World Wind as the viewer.

Next lets get to detailed, I’m guessing he isn’t talking about image resolution here but information, well besides the default placenames database World Wind also has many user created add-ons for the Moon (for GE users an add-on is kind of like a kml) . Here is a list of some, Lunar Landmarks, Apollo Landings, Lunar Geology, Moon Pictures, and Moon Phases.

Now to delicious, well we have the best Lunar imagery and terrain data available from the Clementine mission and I’m pretty sure the image above (using the heavenly bodies plug-in) is delicious, also check the video below.

According to Nature World Wind Moon is pretty good too (sorry subscription required).

  1. Bull, I think you are being a tad defensive. Of course NWW is also detailed and delicious, but as for accessible — where’s the version for my Mac that’s been promised for ages? I can run Google Moon in my browser.

  2. Stefan, I agree I may be a tad defensive, after pouring all my efforts into NWW and then seeing Google getting all the glory I go a bit mad.

As for a Mac version, several people have already made WWJ apps that run on the Mac, see http://forum.worldwindcentral.com/showthread.php?t=10783 and http://forum.worldwindcentral.com/forumdisplay.php?f=41

    1. I believe it is due to missing or corrupt data from the original Clementine mission.

A person in a motorized wheelchair sits outdoors overlooking a wide landscape of fields, trees, and a distant town. The wheelchair is fitted with mounted devices and has a “STARK INDUSTRIES” label. The person wears a Guardians of the Galaxy T‑shirt and a cap that says “STARK” Above the photo is the GoFundMe logo, and below it the campaign title reads: “Help Daniel Replace His Failing Wheelchair and Stay Active.”
